Charming house with great views and lovely pool!
Casa Morada is a charming house in the hills above San Juan del Sur, far from the noisy town. You get there on a dirt road that can be challenging, depending on the season. For most of our month long + stay the road was quite rough, requiring a 4WD if you want to go at a reasonable speed. During our last few days, they did grade the road so it was better. Once inside the gated community the road is paved, but steep. The house is beautiful and the photos don't do it justice, especially older photos where the walls were painted purple. The new white paint throughout brings out the interesting achitectural design and spaciousness. It is much larger than the photos show, especially the well-kept very large pool. The huge roof covering everything (except the pool) allows for an open kitchen and lounging spaces, and refuge from the rare rainstorm, true open living. There is a tiled fountain, small pool and water course which wasn't on most of the time, although it worked when we asked it to be turned on for a while. The master bedroom had a comfortable king mattress, beautiful view and we never used the air conditioner as the the two fans above the bed were sufficient. The caretaker, Carlos, is very accommodating, as is Jorge, his assistant that handles security and other chores. We (seniors) felt totally safe here. The fridge had a good icemaker which we appreciated. The wifi worked great. There was a power outage and Carlos started the generator immediately so no problem. The staff at GPS properties were quite helpful when required, which wasn't often. Owner was very patient answering all my many questions.
San Juan del Sur is a ten minute drive to lots of restaurants, grocery stores and a great walking beach.
The negatives were trivial when considering the good deal we got for our long stay and the great house. It is showing some signs of age in the little things like latches, shashes, etc. But that's OK. Carlos keeps two parrots in his bodega which start calling “Hanna” usually in the morning and in the evening which we found annoying at first, thinking it was a neighbour calling his kid but we got used to the sounds. You are in the tropics so there are mosquitoes and noseeums around so bring bug spray. Be prepared for high winds in Jan-Feb.
l wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, great views, beautiful sunsets, and good service. We had lots of adventures during our trip.
